Seafood soups are generally made from a broth or a cream base and include various kinds of shellfish or fish. They are part of several different world cultures and are made in such places as France, China and the Eastern United States. Seafood soups and stews are also relatively easy to prepare and can be inexpensive as well, depending on the ingredients.

Almost any kind of seafood can be used in soup. Cooks who like freshwater fish can try making a soup with salmon, chopped broccoli and cream. Shellfish lovers can use shrimp in many different soup and stew recipes, such as Shrimp Bisque and Shrimp Gumbo. A popular seafood stew from California is Cioppino, which uses tomatoes and chicken broth to make a smooth base and adds shrimps, scallops, clams, mussels, crab and cod.

Chowder is a commonly made seafood soup. The kind of seafood used in the chowder depends on what is locally available in the area. In the northeastern United States, chowder may be made with clams and potatoes. In the southeastern United States, it may include she-crab meat and crawfish. Typically, chowders use a cream base, but some of them can also be adapted to work with a tomato broth base, such as Manhattan Clam Chowder.

If it can fit into the cook’s budget, lobster is popular seafood for use in soup. There are many kinds of lobster soup recipes, including Lobster Bisque, Lobster Soup, Lobster Gazpacho and Lobster Bouillabaisse. Those who need to stick with a low-cost meal can use canned fish, such as canned salmon, canned crab meat and even canned tuna to prepare a simple and affordable stew.

To serve a seafood soup as an appetizer, it is generally best to stick with a lighter soup, such as a Hot and Sour Shrimp Soup or a Creamy Crab Soup. If the stew will be the main course, however, heavier recipes that use bulky fish, potatoes or whole shellfish would be appropriate. This would include recipes such as Halibut Chowder, Corn and Crab Chowder or Oyster Stew. Served along with bread, rolls or crackers, seafood soup can serve as a complete meal.

Make sure your grill is clean and oiled. Fish sticks to the grill very easily, so proper lubrication is essential. If you don’t oil your grill, the fish will stick, and break apart when you try to remove it. Grab a wad of paper towels, or a rolled up kitchen towel in a pair of tongs. Dip the paper towels or kitchen towel into some vegetable oil, and rub the oil onto the grill. You can also spray the grill with cooking spray, just be sure the grill is off when you do this, or the spray could ignite, injuring you.

Use fresh fish if possible, since it is easier to work with than frozen fish. Each serving should be about 6-8 ounces for fillets or steaks, and 8-12 ounces for whole fish. You can place fish directly on the grill, but if you do this, you should use a firm fleshed fish, like grouper, tuna, swordfish, or salmon. You can also buy grill baskets made for grilling seafood. These will help small pieces of fish from falling through the grill, and will help in grilling delicate fillets.

Cook the fish over medium-hot to hot heat. If your grill doesn’t have a thermometer, then hold your hand about 5 inches above the heat. If you can hold your hand there for 2 seconds, the temperature is hot. If you can hold your hand 5 inches from the heat for 3-4 seconds, it is medium hot. If you’re cooking whole fish, you’ll need to have the temperature a bit lower, so the fish won’t burn. You should plan on cooking the fish for about 10 minutes for every inch of thickness. The fish is done cooking when it is opaque, and begins to flake. It is better to undercook the fish a bit than overcooking it. You can always cook it some more if it is undercooked, but you can’t uncook it if it is overcooked.

Marinades are a good way to add flavor and moisture to the fish before cooking. You only need to marinate fish for 30-60 minutes. If you marinate the fish for too long, the acids in the marinade will start to cook and break down the flesh. Lean fish should also be basted during cooking to keep the fish from drying out. Fattier fish, like tuna and salmon don’t need basting, but you can baste them to add more flavor.

Shrimp, Scallops, and chunks of firm fleshed fish work well on skewers. Alternate chunks of seafood with chunks of vegetables on a skewer for great seafood kebobs. If you’re using wooden skewers, be sure to soak them for 30 minutes before grilling to prevent them from burning on the grill.

Beach vacations offer a nice variety of activities, including fine dining. Practically every beach enthusiast looks forward to enjoying seafood while visiting their favorite seaside retreat. Depending on the location, visitors are likely to find excellent options in fresh local seafood. Experienced beach goers might choose to enjoy seafood after a day on the sand, or pack a cooler and take home some of the local items for later.

The northeast USA is home to clams, scallops, lobsters, cod, striped bass, swordfish and other seafood. Visitors to Maine, Massachusetts, New York and other areas are thrilled to find local restaurants and seafood stands where fresh lobster, steam clams and other treasures are served hot and ready to eat. As vacationers move south along the Mid-Atlantic coast, the variety changes to include blue crabs, oysters, saltwater trout, flounder and more.

The Chesapeake Bay area includes Delaware, Maryland and Virginia. Local seafood restaurants, carryouts and markets serve crabs, scallops, oysters, clams, fish and other local items. Delicacies such as steamed crabs, soft crab sandwiches and crabcakes await summertime travelers. In the cooler months, oysters, clams and fish are in season and ready to enjoy.

Beaches along the southern part of the USA feature a different style of cooking and variety of seafood. Once vacationers reach North Carolina and South, shrimp, snapper, cobia and other fish begin to dominate the cuisine. Fresh local shrimp are an integral part of beach cuisine thru the Carolinas, Georgia and into Florida, Mississippi, Louisiana and Texas. Beach lovers that venture into the Caribbean also find unique seafood dishes that might include unfamiliar dishes such as conch chowder, grilled rock lobster tails, mahi mahi and grouper. The mixture of tropical fruits, spices and local seafood offer visitors with exciting mealtime experiences.

Seafood is extremely nutritional and contains high levels of protein and fish oils, primarily omega-3 which is an essential fat required as part of a good balanced diet. Most of the nutrients, minerals, fatty acids, and amino acids -that your bodies need to develop through childhood and remain healthy throughout life – are present in seafood. Many people laud the virtues of seafood, though some individuals dispute this. Seafood is a natural functional food; with no need to be fortified with other functional food ingredients to make it healthier for you. In fact, some of the health benefits of seafood will be lost, if you bread and deep-fry it. So it is best to grill, bake, steam, broil, boil, microwave, or lightly sauté your seafood.

Without getting too technical, you realize why seafood is such a great functional food. For development and maintenance of musculature throughout our lifetime, your bodies need amino acids – proteins that make body muscle. Good health is the result of nine amino acids that your bodies need on a daily – and all seafood contains all nine of these amino acids. No more, no less!

Another reason why seafood is a functional food is it contains ‘omega-3 fatty acids’ needed to remain healthy. Along wit homega3′s, seafood contains an abundance of this polyunsaturated fatty acid. In some fish species – like sablefish, Anoplopoma fimbria – the omega-3 literally oozes from its flesh. Omega-3 fatty acids reduce the bad LDL blood cholesterol levels and increasing the good HDL cholesterol levels. This reduces your chances of cardiovascular disease – reduced chance of strokes and heart attacks.

Another notable fact that makes seafood functional food is that it contains ‘Selenium’ – something your bodies need for maintaining your immunity against disease. Every cell in your body needs Selenium to function properly. Crab and lobster species contain a high amount of Selenium, though seafood in general contains at least some of this vital element. Thus, two of the most delectable crustaceans of the sea are such a rich source of something that your bodies need to fight diseases. That is the benefit being true omnivores, something that true vegans miss out on entirely!

Remember that seafood is not only delicious; it can also provide wonderful benefits to your health.

Seafood can be purchased either fresh or frozen. By freezing the seafood fresh it can be shipped all over the world so everyone can have the opportunity to enjoy fresh seafood that they may not otherwise be able to enjoy. Seafood that has not been kept at or below 39 degrees may not be safe to eat, so if you’re not sure if it’s good or not, throw it away. It is not worth the risk of getting sick. When choosing to purchase fresh seafood be sure and check it out thoroughly to make sure it is fresh. One thing to look for is to make sure the eyes are not bulging, but clear instead. Don’t accept fish where the gills are pink, they should always be red. A very important fact to remember is that even though it is seafood, it should not have a fishy smell to it. If you notice any of these things wrong, do not purchase the seafood.

The best and safest way to cook frozen seafood is while it is still frozen. You can cook it by baking the seafood in an oven, or cooking it in a frying pan. The most popular way to cook seafood is wrapped in foil, and placed on a barbeque grill. This seems to give you the best flavor possible. You can thaw out the seafood before cooking it, but if you do this, make sure you cook it as quick as you can. If you do not cook all seafood that has been thawed, make sure you throw away any that is left. Seafood can never be refrozen. Because eating seafood can actually treat some illness and prevent certain diseases, it can be considered a very healthily diet. Some fish contain the omega-3 oils which help stop certain disease, and help in the aid of curing some illness. Most all seafood is high in protein and low in fat, with the exception of a few, such as the eel.

Eat healthy, eat fresh seafood Prepared to perfection, fresh seafood can make you want to be on a seafood diet for ever. Seafood is more healthy for you than eating red or white meats that contain lots of fats.

Fresh seafood does not always mean that it has not been frozen; it sometimes means that it was frozen fresh. After all, if you didn’t buy it frozen, you would be limited to only a few choices of seafood instead of being able to enjoy seafood from around the world. If you decide that really fresh, unfrozen seafood is what you prefer, there are a few things to look for to ensure you are really receiving fresh seafood.

The first thing you look at are the eyes, make sure they are clear, not bulging. Next the gills should be red, not even slightly pink. The flesh of the fish should feel firm.

Most importantly the fish should not have a fishy smell to it. To keep the seafood from going bad you should store it at 39 degrees and cook it as soon as possible. Remember, if there are any doubt as to rather seafood is fresh or not, don’t take a chance on eating it. Seafood that has spoiled can make you very sick. The best way to cook seafood is when it is still frozen.

A lot of people prefer the taste of it when it has been cooked on a barbeque grill. Wrapping it in foil helps give it the most favorable taste possible. Seafood can also be cooked in a frying pan, or baked in an oven. If you do thaw out the seafood before cooking it, then you have to make sure it is cooked immediately upon thawing and should never be refrozen. Seafood is good for you because it is low in fat and high in protein. Most fish contain oils that are called omega-3. These oils can help prevent some diseases and treat certain types of illness. The eel is one type of seafood that contains a high fat content, but only a very few types of seafood contain fat.

Being on a seafood diet can be considered a very smart and healthy thing to do. There is a long list of diseases that eating fresh fish can help prevent. In countries where the women eat less red meat and more seafood, they have less problems with breast cancer. Another disease that seafood seems to help prevent is Alzheimer’s.

You can also take fish oil instead of eating seafood if you prefer. Seafood is a great source for women to receive iron and iodine, which are two vitamins that help your thyroids. If you want to add iron and zinc to your diet try eating scallops and mussels. By eating seafood on a regular basic you can enjoy many healthy benefits.
